In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Review
One thing that came to my mind when I started to write this post? 'Well that's a hell of a lot of pages'.
I mean, 487 pages? Seriously? It didn't feel that long when I read them a month ago. But then again, maybe it's because the story kept me sitting on the edges of my chair that I didn't even realize it was that long.
When I first came across Divergent, I've already heard many great reviews about this book. And when I saw those trailer, I was totally intrigued. So by the end of last month, I decided to give this book a try. And from the very first sentence, I already wanted to know more.
Divergent told us about the future Chicago society, where people were divided into factions based on their personality and choices. Each faction had their own distinctive trait, like the brave Dauntless, Peace-loving Amity, etc. Among them, the selfless Abnegation was viewed as the lowest because of their trait. And that's where our main character, Beatrice Prior, was born.
"I am selfish. I am brave."
—Tris
We also saw Tris's interesting experience as she tried to fit into her new environment, which bore no resemblance to her Abnegation. I love how Tris was not an all-complains-and-no-action type of heroine. She was strong, stand for herself, logical, and was able to make a move.
And there was also Four, our main hero, which was well developed too. He sounded believable, not an oh-he's-so perfect, and moreover, very human.
In this debut book of her, Veronica Roth definitely had such an interesting world building and great character. Unfortunately, I wasn't really fond of how Ms. Roth decided to end Divergent in such an abrupt way. Maybe it was meant to be a cliffhanger, but really, it sounded like it had a continuation to another chapter.
Overall, I love this book. It quite rare this day to see a book which has such an imaginative yet believable setting, and moreover great character. For all dystopian lover, you really have to try this one, if you haven't already.
